STUDENT READINESS FOR WORK PLACEMENT Generally work placements will only occur after there has been a reasonable amount of student/teacher contact and when the teacher is satisfied that you are ready to benefit from workplace learning and perform workplace duties. Your teacher can provide further information. NSW HEALTH Before you commence any clinical placements in NSW Health facilities, you will be required to - Meet NSW Health’s - Criminal Record Check requirements; - Sign the NSW Health Code of Conduct form and any other forms, as required by NSW Health; - Undertake Occupational Assessment, Screening and Vaccination against Infectious Diseases and provide your Health Care Worker/Student Vaccination Record Card. For specific information regarding NSW Health’s requirements, and access to the required forms, it is recommended that you visit their FAQs for students at NSW Health website. COMMUNITY AND CHILDREN’S SERVICES Anyone in child-related work (including student placements and volunteers) MUST have a current Working with Children Check (students/volunteers free if over 18) in line with the Office of Children’s Guardian phase-in schedule and processes. For further information visit the NSW Office of the Children's Guardian website and search for Working With Children Check. AGED CARE WORK Before you undertake any clinical placements in Aged Care Facilities you will be required to undertake a National Police Check. For further information visit the Australian Federal Police website and search for National Police Checks. ENROLLING IN FIRST AID UNITS OF COMPETENCY During the practical CPR assessment you will be required to perform at least 2 minutes of uninterrupted CPR both on an infant and adult mannequin placed on the floor. This is the training package requirement and you should consider your ability to perform this assessment task before enrolling.

To be eligible for government subsidised training under the Smart and Skilled program, individuals must meet personal eligibility requirements including:
  • You must live or work in NSW
  • You must be an Australian citizen, Australian permanent resident, Australian permanent humanitarian visa holder, or a New Zealand citizen. Temporary Visa Holders who are contracted NSW Apprentices / NSW Trainees may be eligible for government subsidised funding. Please contact your TAFE college/campus
  • You must be 15 years old or older
  • You must have left school

VET Student Loans:

This course is approved under the Commonwealth VET Student Loans program. If you are an eligible student you have the option to pay your tuition fees or apply for a VET Student Loan for all or part of your tuition fees. The Commonwealth sets a loan cap on the amount it will lend to a student for each course.  These are the covered fees. In some cases the course fees may exceed the covered fees, and you will have to pay the difference.

If you intend to apply for a VET Student Loan, we will first check that you meet the eligibility and academic suitability requirements for a loan (see below) then forward your details to the Commonwealth. You will be sent an email with a log on and passkey for the online loan application. 

To complete the application, you will need:

  • your Tax File number (TFN). If you do not have a TFN,  you need to apply for one (through most Australia Post outlets). You can complete your loan application with a Certificate of Application for a TFN, but must provide your TFN as soon as it is issued. If you don’t provide your TFN before your first census day, you will need to pay the tuition fees for that unit of study.
  • your Commonwealth Higher Education Student Support Number (CHESSN).  If you have previously accessed a loan via the Higher Education Loan Program (HELP), either at TAFE or university, you will already have a CHESSN. You must use the same CHESSN  whenever you access a student loan. If you don’t have CHESSN, we will allocate one on your behalf.

Academic suitability – To be eligible for a VET Student Loan, you will need to be assessed as academically suitable to undertake high level VET study. You can:

  • provide a copy of your senior secondary certificate of education (that has been awarded by an Australian authority or agency); or
  • provide evidence of attainment of an Australian Qualification Framework qualification at Certificate 4 level or above.  If it is a TAFE NSW qualification, just tell us when and where you studied; or
  • undertake a literacy and numeracy assessment and be competent at Exit Level 3 or above in reading and numeracy. Your college will assist you through the process to undertake this assessment if you need to. It’s free of charge.
